World Cup Posters - An Observation

Until they were designed by marketing tossers - like the souless design used by USA in '94 - World Cup Posters were beautiful things. They also told you, at a glance, the way the respective countries viewed the game.

Look at this, France '38. The ball, under the player's control. Beautiful.

1938

Or this, Brazil '50. Again, the ball is under control.

1950
Then there's this. The English effort. World Cup Willie cheerfully hoofing the ball upfield...

1966
In All Played Out, Pete Davies' wonderful book about Italia '90, he observed that, if you watch Italy and England play, you are left in no doubt as to which country gave us the Renaissance, and which the Industrial Revolution.

Just sayin'.
